According to the US government, Ukrainian forces have made “significant progress” in their counteroffensive in the southern region of Zaporizhia over the past 72 hours. National Security Council communications director John Kirby said today in Washington.
“That’s not to say they aren’t aware that they still have some difficult battles ahead of them as they try to advance further south,” he added.
Ukraine has been waging a counteroffensive since the beginning of the summer, but is making slow progress. In recent days, however, the Ukrainian army has reported successes in its attacks on heavily fortified Russian defense lines in the south.
The objective is to advance to the Sea of Azov, around 80 kilometers away, and thus cut the land connection to the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which Russia annexed.
