Ursa is shot, leaving the boys alone and the case sparks outrage in Italy

A bear was shot dead in a village in the Italian town of San Benedetto dei Marsi. According to the local press, the animal did not attack and gave birth to two puppies that were abandoned. The case triggered a wave of revolt in the country.
The act took place on the night of Thursday 31st, near the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, which is home to around 50 brown bears, a species found in central Italy. Animal rights activists and politicians condemned the action.

Bear hunting is a crime in Italy. The suspected shooter has already been identified by police. There is no information yet on what motivated the shooting.
According to the Portal news agency, video footage showed that the mother bear had been seen with her cubs days earlier. It was known as “Amarena” (black cherry), named after the fruit it ate.
There are known cases of accidents in the country. In April, a bear killed a 26yearold runner in northern Italy. The young man’s death sparked a legal battle between local authorities seeking to euthanize the animal, considered dangerous, and environmental groups seeking to save it.
