Here we are, Starfield is finally here. Bethesda’s game was announced in 2018 and has been in development since 2013. It was always sold as a gigantic sci-fi RPG with a playground to explore that was larger, more complex and more detailed than the publisher previously imagined. Does he keep his promises?

The campaign that convinces you
Although it may seem simple, Starfield’s plot is deeper than we expected. It relies on familiar dramatic levers and places the player at the center of a mystery in which faith and science regularly interact. Because yes, what does religion still mean in a time when humans have exceeded all boundaries thanks to technology? The main protagonists are interesting and have strong personalities. Bethesda has gained ground in terms of writing quality.
Beautiful as a mist
Graphically, Starfield oscillates between the splendid and the less splendid. Bethesda offers excellent space bases, magnificent climate effects and impressive cities, many successful faces, but also shows less developed creatures or protagonists and planets that are too simple. However, the disproportionate size of the playing area comes at a price. The opposite lies in the compartmentalization of experience: the charges, even short ones, are numerous. And the flaws in all of this? They hardly exist!

Echo from the past
Starfield is played in first- and third-person perspectives and, thanks to the focus on ship management, offers both well-executed gunfights and well-crafted space shooter sequences. However, when it comes to pure RPG content, Starfield remains in conquered territory. There are enough choices and ability to customize skills to play the way you want and achieve your goals the way you want. Basically, the software is classic in its RP dimension, but offers a completely disproportionate gaming universe.

Between the campaign, the additional objectives, the crafting, the building of ships and outposts, and even the analysis of planets, Starfield is a bottomless pit in terms of content. At this point it would be more appropriate to call it an open universe game and not just an open world game. Yes, there is always something to see and do in this incredible universe, such as visiting one of the 1,000 available planets. Ultimately, there are strangely few tutorials compared to all the options on offer, so you have to experiment to understand all the functionality.
By taking the risk of doing everything, Starfield inevitably comes up against numerous competitors and therefore receives scathing feedback on aspects that might be perceived as under-explored. The reality is that Bethesda’s new creation gives the player the choice to design their experience a la carte. Captivating in its themes, just mysterious enough to keep us thinking about it even when the console is turned off, it’s a huge success.
