A boat missing since 1881 was found at the bottom of Lake Michigan earlier this year.
The Wisconsin Historical Society made the announcement on its Facebook page Saturday, adding that the discovery occurred on July 15.
“Diver and historians Brendin Baillod and Bob Jaeck located the wreck of the small ship Trinidad at a depth of 82 meters near the town of Algoma earlier this year,” it said.

This vessel was specifically designed to navigate the canal connecting Lakes Erie and Ontario.

According to the historical society, the boat, built in 1867, had a relatively short existence, while its owners would not have invested much money in maintenance.
“His hull sank and the captain was nearly killed by a block that fell from a damaged wire,” the release said.

On its final voyage in 1881, the ship filled with water on Lake Michigan before suddenly sinking.

The crew managed to escape, but a Newfoundland dog was never found after the sinking.
The Wisconsin Historical Society now plans to analyze the shipwreck site and add it to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
