Venice Film Festival 2023
The red carpet of Venice Film Festival has become one of the most discussed September topics in recent years. But if tradition wanted the caliber of stars arriving at the Lido, the glamorous aspect of the event and the details of the style to serve as fuel for chatter, in some editions the distance that separates fame has now become the subject of the Debate has become from those who go there to those who should go there. To make it simpler: the national sport aims to make fun of the supposed credibility of the personalities from the world of Italian entertainment brought to the red carpet by various sponsors in order to give visibility to the event.
Every edition seems to have its parvenus, those taken out of context and coming from worlds seemingly incomparable to that of cinema, and every year there is no lack of the well-known figure who is not in Venice and Venice criticized for exactly this aspect (this year). (he Guè Pequeno opened the dance in his own way). Last year, the Gieffini Sophie Codegoni and Alessandro Basciano became the symbols of this category, kneeling awkwardly in front of his partner on the red carpet and proposing to her.
So far this year, influencers of all stripes have been spotted on the red carpet or on a speedboat Giulia Salemi and Pierpaolo Pretellifor rappers like Geolier And Lazza Constipation in unlikely clothing, up to Giorgia Soleri, who was keen to point out on her Instagram Stories that she was the first Italian woman to go to the Venice Film Festival without shaving her legs. And there’s still a week until closing: if all this isn’t surprising!

An event that becomes an opportunity for improvised productions, unlikely looks and a cross-story, but at the same time stimulates the interest of sponsors to bring talent to the lagoon, is a living event. It would be short-sighted to believe that certain presences could overshadow the cinematic event, just as it would be short-sighted to believe that it would be bad for cinema if a fleeting event like a red carpet marriage proposal catalyzed the attention of the day’s Venice event himself.
An entertainment event as such cannot do without certain extras that prove to be significant in the end. Relegating the new categories of well-known characters to a sphere of lower dignity, instead of looking at certain epiphenomena with a smile, risks pushing Venice into a corner for a few editions. Looking at all this with sympathy and also with curiosity to see who can confidently keep up with this showcase can be an interesting test and serve as a storytelling tool. On the contrary, we can express our outrage on social media and mourn the Venice that was (who knows when).
“The future belongs to those who are professionally curious,” was the sentence from an old film that I try to remember every day. I’ve been writing about entertainment and television since 2012, hoping to describe the reality we see through a screen, no matter how big it is. Renzo Arbore is my prophet.
