Belarusian activists and NGOs from Russia and Ukraine win the Nobel Peace Prize
The Nobel Foundation, which organizes the award ceremony for the same year at ceremonies in the city of Stockholm, announced on Saturday (2) that it will not send invitations this year to ambassadors from the following countries:
The foundation initially said it would invite representatives from these countries, but now the organization has changed its mind.
Last year, the foundation skipped ambassadors from Russia and its ally Belarus due to the invasion of Ukraine.
On Thursday, the foundation announced that it would invite ambassadors from these countries. The idea was to include those who do not share the same ideas as the organizers.
Sweden’s political leaders responded by saying they would boycott the ceremony. Then the foundation went back and disinvited the Russians, Belarusians and Iranians.
“We have decided to repeat last year’s exception to the regular procedure that is, not to invite the ambassadors of Russia, Belarus and Iran to the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm,” the organization said in a statement.
The winners will be announced at the beginning of October. The nomination process is kept secret. The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded in Oslo, where special celebrations will take place.
