MLB: A catcher tries to fool an umpire, and it’s not nearly as bad

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya attempted the unthinkable of stealing a catch from a Milwaukee Brewers batter in Wednesday’s game at Wrigley Field, but the home plate umpire didn’t fall for the trick.

Early in the fifth inning, Christian Yelich was at the plate when starter Kyle Hendricks fired a shot that touched the ground before bouncing into Amaya’s glove. However, he immediately raised his glove and waited motionless for a few seconds, hoping that official DJ Reyburn would call a strike on the throw.

The maneuver failed, except that Hendricks took out Yelich shortly afterwards. And the day ended well for the Cubs, who triumphed 3-2.

The fact is that the attempt has piqued the interest of many supporters on social networks and the reactions have been varied, to say the least.
