In the week that marks 26 years since her tragic death in Paris, Princess Diana’s voice continues to be heard. This time based on unpublished statements from the ex-wife of the current King Charles III, in which the princess mentioned that her husband had expressed “disappointment” that their second child was a boy.
Diana Spencer recorded a series of conversations with her boyfriend James Colthurst in the 1990s – while struggling with an unhappy marriage and her husband’s infidelity with his now wife Camilla Parker Bowles – and then secretly sent them to writer Andrew Morton . From these audios, Morton published a book in 1992 called Diana: Her True Story, which quickly became a bestseller.
The new audio will be featured in the documentary “Diana: The Rest of Her Story,” which will premiere next year and was unveiled this Friday on American ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“At Harry’s baptism, Carlos walked up to Mom and said, ‘You know? “We were so disappointed because we thought it was going to be a girl,” Diana said in the recording. “And Mom hit him on the head a little bit and said, ‘You should realize how lucky you are to have a normal son,'” he recalled.
The princess said that from that day on, Charles no longer spoke to his mother-in-law, Frances Shand Kydd. “That’s what he does when someone answers him,” he said in the audio.
Diana and Carlos were married for 15 years until they divorced in 1996. Their children were born in 1982 (William) and 1984 (Harry).
Carlos’ current relationship with Harry is strained. In January 2020, the prince and his wife, American actress Meghan Markle, announced that they were quitting their royal duties and moving to the United States, where they currently live. Since then, Charles and Diana’s youngest son’s relationship with the rest of his family has been fraught with conflict, with Harry constantly criticizing his father and his brother, Crown Prince William.
In another released audio, Diana also talks about her conflicted relationship with her stepmother Raine Spencer. “I told him, ‘I hate you so much. If only you knew how much we all hate you for what you’ve done. You ruined the house. “You spent daddy’s money. “I said everything I could,” the princess said in the audio. Her stepmother responded that she “had no idea how much pain her mother had caused her father.”
“Pain, Raine? That’s a word you can’t even relate to. In my job and in my role I see people suffering like you have never seen before. And you call that pain? “He still has a lot to learn,” Diana replied.
The author said he has about seven hours of audio from Princess Diana.Morton noted on Good Morning America that hearing Diana’s voice firsthand was a real “thrill.” “She never thought for a second that Camilla would become queen, so we have a very different perspective on how the story unfolds,” Morton said.
The author said that he has over seven hours of audio in total and that he still doesn’t know whether he will distribute more, although he knows that “there is worldwide interest” and that he is aware of the impact if people read Diana History directly hear their voice.
“It’s one thing to read something on a page, but it’s another thing to hear the person talk about it, and here is Diana talking about her ambitions for the future,” Morton said. “There is a real intensity to some aspects of the tone and I think people will get a very vivid sense of his personality and character.”
Morton was convinced by the new documentary’s director and executive producer, Tom Jennings, to allow him to use Diana’s footage for both the next documentary and his first documentary, “Diana: In Her Own Words,” released in 2017 National Geographic.
