There are six of them!!. The “Centro-La Pieve” district won today, September 3rd, the 33rd edition of the Palio del Vecchio Mercato di Montebelluna, extending the winning streak to six consecutive “poles”. A success that was above all public: the 2023 edition recorded record numbers, both in person and through social channels.
“I really appreciated the speech of the mayor Adalberto Bordin – said Nicola Palumbo, president of the Palio body that organizes the event – on the stage of the Palio in Piazza Sedese, in which he pointed out the need to deal with the future of the event a different legal entity and more solid. Because understandably not everyone can know the number of parameters and variables. The Palio del Vecchio Mercato in this form costs around 220,000 euros. These costs will be covered in 2023 by 20,000 euros (9% of the total) from the municipality, 50,000 euros (around 22.7% of the total) from sponsors, 20,000 euros (9% of the total) from the lottery and 8,200 euros (approx 3.7%) from the Veneto region.
“The rest – he continues – about 122,000 euros, which represents 55% of the total, comes from self-government (fees from the sale of food and drinks). This last point is heavily influenced by uncontrollable variables such as the weather. The organizing legal entity is designed as a committee, i.e. as a body reporting to the president that assumes economic and legal responsibility towards third parties.”
“That’s why,” he concludes, “I have to take responsibility especially when debts or damage to people or property occur, because remember: I carry out my role free of charge.” A new legal entity has been discussed for years. Let me be clear: it is important to do this with a horizon already focused on 2024. The risks are too great, and perhaps as I get older I become more reluctant to take them. For this reason, what the mayor said is in the right direction, not so much for my protection, but for the protection of all those who want to become president of the Palio after me.”
