The artist has been battling heart and liver problems for years, exacerbated by alcoholism. In 2001, he lost a six-month-old son who died of fulminant leukemia
Steve Scott Harwell, 56, former lead singer of the group Smash Mouth, dies. According to people close to him, he only has a week left at most. After a series of hospital stays, he returned home to spend his final days surrounded by family and friends. The website TMZ reported the deterioration in his condition, citing sources close to the family.
Born in Santa Clara, California, he studied music and singing since childhood and, after some experience as a rapper and in some smaller groups, founded Smash Mouth in 1994 together with Greg Camp, Kevin Coleman and Paul De Lisle. The band quickly found success with songs like “All Star,” “I’m the Believer” and more.
Harwell suffered a very serious loss in 2001 when his six-month-old son died from a form of fulminant leukemia. According to friends, this dramatic side of his life forever marked the singer, who began to abuse alcohol more and more, which had already been a problem for him in the past. According to some sources cited by TMZ, he had also used drugs.
Harwell left Smash Mouth in 2021 for health reasons: devastated by alcohol and with heart and liver problems, he was no longer able to cope with the fatigue of concerts and tours, one evening he appeared on stage in a visible state of change, without even having to be able to pronounce the lyrics of the songs.
Over the past two years his health had progressively deteriorated.
