A regulation published on Tuesday by the Ministry of Justice (5) establishes rules for the issuance of temporary or residence visas for residents of the Community of PortugueseSpeaking Countries (CPLP). The validity period of the visa is initially two years.

Nine countries are part of the CPLP. In addition to Brazil, the group also includes Angola, Cape Verde, GuineaBissal, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and TimorLeste.

In the case of Brazil, the government has decided to grant temporary visas for up to two years for:

  • Teacher;
  • Business people;
  • researcher;
  • cultural actors such as artists and athletes;
  • exchange students;
  • highly qualified technicians.

This type of document must be requested at the Brazilian embassies or consulates general in the interested party’s country of origin.

Foreigners who are already in Brazil can be granted a residence permit regardless of their migration status. The visa must be applied for at a federal police unit.

Immigrants who want to obtain a residence visa in Brazil must not have a criminal record in the country and must provide proof of their ability to support themselves.
