United delays all flights nationwide after ground stop due to ‘equipment failure’

CNN –

United Airlines delayed more than 300 flights after the FAA lifted a brief ground stop that continued to impact the airline’s nationwide service.

On Tuesday afternoon, United Airlines delayed all flights nationwide due to an “equipment failure,” according to an alert from the Federal Aviation Administration.

In an update about an hour later, the FAA warning said the “ground stop was canceled.”

“We have found a solution to the technology problem and flights have resumed. “We are working with affected customers to help them reach their destinations as quickly as possible,” United Airlines said Posted on social media.

According to flight tracking site FlightAware, there were still 330 delayed flights as of 3 p.m. EST, representing 12% of flight operations. However, tracking site FlightAware shows that only 14 United flights were canceled on Tuesday.

CNN has reached out to United about the remaining delays.

Tuesday’s ground stop adds to the list of headaches travelers have faced this summer. Hurricane Idalia and severe storms in early August disrupted air travel for thousands of passengers last month alone.

Much of the summer travel chaos affected United Airlines customers. At the end of June, hundreds of cancellations and thousands of delays piled up at United. Based on United’s typical passenger volume from previous earnings reports and the number of canceled flights, more than 400,000 passengers were likely booked on canceled United flights, CNN reported.

Scott Kirby, CEO of United, blamed the FAA and the lack of staff in air traffic control centers for the collapse of the service in addition to the bad weather.

But Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who oversees the FAA, told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, “Air traffic control problems are not the number one problem leading to cancellations and delays. They’re not even the number two problem.”

Kirby apologized to customers and his own employees after taking a private jet during the week of mass delays and cancellations.
