Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are divorcing after four years of marriage and two children together. The Jonas Brothers singer filed for divorce on September 5, Billboard confirmed.
In his petition, the musician said his relationship with the Game of Thrones actress was “irretrievably broken,” according to the Today Show, which received the petition.
News of their split came as a surprise as the couple showed no signs of their marriage falling apart. The actress shared backstage photos with the musician at Jonas Brothers concerts and playfully teased him on social media. In the days after rumors of a split began, the singer wore his ring on stage and even shared a photo of himself wearing his wedding ring hours before it was announced that he had filed for divorce.
Even though their romance is over, it hasn’t always been hard times for Jonas and Turner. After getting engaged to Jonas – who first reached out to the actress via an Instagram DM in 2016 – Turner even admitted that she didn’t think she would ever get married. “I was fully preparing to be single for the rest of my life,” she told Rolling Stone in March 2019. “I think once you find the right person, you just know.”
From sliding into DMs to their two weddings in 2019 (first a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas, then an elegant affair in France) and the birth of two children, the former couple has shared many beautiful moments together during their romance. 2016: Joe slides into Sophie’s DMs
Sophie Turner definitely wasn’t into the JoBros before she met her husband. “My friends and I weren’t Jonas Brothers fans… We hated them,” the actress told Elle in the April 2020 issue. But that all changed after he came forward on social media.
“We were following each other on Instagram and he sent me a direct message out of the blue one fine day,” she shared in her May 2019 cover story with Harper’s Bazaar UK. They finally met in a bar, where the musician won her over. “I expected him to show up, security and everything,” she told Elle. “I thought, ‘He’s going to be so cool.’
“We talked for hours. And I wasn’t bored. It wasn’t contrived. It wasn’t small talk – it was just so simple,” she shared. “And soon we were inseparable. I went on tour with him.”

Following the Billboard Music Awards, the couple attended a chapel in Las Vegas with friends and family in attendance to make the ceremony official. Diplo streamed the ceremony live on Instagram as the two exchanged vows, with an Elvis impersonator as best man.
June 29, 2019: Married…again!
Jonas and Turner made sure to have an extravagant wedding alongside the Sin City ceremony. The couple tied the knot again at a castle in Sarrians in southern France.
July 22, 2020: Their first baby, Willa, is born
Jonas and Turner had their first child, a girl named Willa, in the summer of 2020. “Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas are pleased to announce the birth of their baby,” the couple said in a statement to Billboard at the time. The couple remained pretty quiet throughout the actress’s pregnancy, never making a statement to confirm they were pregnant, although she was spotted out and about with a baby bump.
July 14, 2022: Welcoming baby #2
Jonas and Turner welcomed their second baby, another daughter, in the summer of 2022. “Joe and Sophie are excited to announce the arrival of their baby girl,” their reps told People at the time. The name of her younger daughter has yet to be publicly announced.
September 5, 2023: Joe files for divorce
Days after rumors of the couple’s impending split surfaced over Labor Day weekend, Joe filed for divorce in Florida’s Miami-Dade County on Tuesday (September 5), Billboard confirmed. The singer said in court papers that the marriage was “irretrievably broken.”
