Political ads managed by Google will soon have to clearly state whether an artificial intelligence (AI) tool was used in their design, the American giant announced on Wednesday.

This decision by the world’s leading digital advertising company comes at a time when the rapid development of AI is raising concerns about its potential misuse, particularly in the campaign for the 2024 American presidential election.
“Due to the increasing use of tools that generate artificial content, we are expanding our policies to require advertisers to disclose if their election advertising contains material that has been digitally created or modified,” a spokesperson said. – Google spokesperson told AFP.
The Group sells advertising space on its own websites and applications and acts as an intermediary between advertisers who wish to display their advertising online and third-party websites or applications that display them.
Google already prohibits ads managed across its platforms from manipulating digital content that aims to mislead political issues, as well as ads that make false claims that could undermine trust in the electoral system.
According to Google, starting in November, political ads will be required to “clearly state” whether they contain “man-made content” depicting real or seemingly real people or events.
The Californian giant said it continues to invest to better detect and remove these elements.
The notice must be “clear and clearly visible,” Google warned, including examples of possible notices: “This image does not show a real event” or “This video was artificially generated.”
In early July, the support committee for Ron DeSantis, candidate in the Republican primaries in the United States, sparked controversy by using a fake voice of Donald Trump, generated by an AI and similar to that of the former president, in a commercial.
