It’s been 20 years since “The Return of the King”, the last film in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, was released in cinemas. However, Peter Jackson’s films still reveal some secrets!
20 years after the release of the last Lord of the Rings film, Peter Jackson’s trilogy continues to surprise us with new filming information. This time it’s Ian McKellen who tells us more about his habits on set. In fact, the actor had constant help in his pocket throughout the filming of the three feature films, which may well have influenced the film saga. Gandalf’s interpreter always carried a copy of Tolkien’s work with him! He used it to compare his scenes with those in the novel. This allowed him to ensure that the scenes shot corresponded to the author’s vision. Otherwise, the actor didn’t hesitate to talk to Peter Jackson about what could have been overlooked or what could be improved. Whether during recording or at night before going to bed, he never let go of the original work! He says this in an interview for the YouTube channel The One Ring.
Peter Jackson was very attentive to Gandalf
According to the actor, the director was very interested in his comments, he took everything that could improve his work. “He’s the boss and it’s his film. It’s his vision of Tolkien. Every fundamental decision went through him. But he is not a tyrant. And like all good directors, he surrounds himself GOOD.” There was a healthy relationship between the two men. However, Ian McKellen said he blamed Peter Jackson for one thing. In fact, in his opinion, he couldn’t always express nuance in his acting. The director wants everything to be white or black so that there are no ambiguities on the screen.

After all, can we really blame Peter Jackson’s decisions? The trilogy continues to this day one of the best literary adaptations of all time. The films have remained very faithful to Tolkien’s writings and still managed to add a certain amount of added value. As a reminder, if you want to see where you can watch these masterpieces again, you can stream them on Prime Video.
