“Here in Marrakesh, Morocco, we were surprised by a magnitude 7 earthquake, according to the German Geoscientific Research Center. Our entire delegation from the Ceará State Government is doing well and is in a safe place and following safety protocols,” Jade assured.

The deputy governor is officially in the African country to attend the 10th UNESCO International Geopark Conference to be held in Marrakech. The event serves as an opportunity for Ceará to promote the candidacy of the Araripe Geopark Mundial to host the XI. International Conference of World Geoparks in Cariri.

The event brings together participants from 195 geoparks from 48 countries. From there, Jade Romero will travel to Madrid, Spain, where she will learn about initiatives related to the Comprehensive Surveillance System for GenderBased Violence (VioGen), as well as other measures related to this issue.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 18.5 kilometers, according to the USGS. There are no immediate reports of damage caused by the quake, but on social network X (Twitter) there are reports of people running into the streets and buildings shaking.

The earthquake occurred about 72 kilometers from the city of Marrakech at 11 p.m. local time (8 p.m. Brasília). The earthquake was also felt in other countries: there are reports in press offices from Portugal, Spain and Algeria.
