On Friday evening at 11:11 p.m. (local time in Rabat, another on mainland Spain) a severe earthquake occurred in Morocco. The epicenter is in Ighil, 72 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh and at a depth of 18 kilometers. In this city, people have taken to the streets and some buildings have been evacuated. Buildings were damaged and numerous debris can be seen on the street and significant cracks in some houses. According to the authorities, there are already reports of “dozens of deaths” following the earthquake.
Some videos shared on social media show people running from buildings and gathering outside. There are also streets with a lot of rubble and some witness accounts speak of partially destroyed houses.
The magnitude 7 earthquake was felt almost across the country, according to local authorities, sparking panic in major cities from north to south. People took to the streets in the capital Rabat, but there was no damage to the building structure. At this time, authorities have reported no injuries or casualties.
According to the Efe agency, the earthquake was felt in Huelva, Seville, Malaga and Jaén. Emergency calls 112 Andalusia has registered twenty calls from these provinces, reporting no damage from the earthquake in Morocco, although it has startled citizens.
