Sara Pascoe, presenter of The Great British Sewing Bee, was criticized for saying of the five people who died in the Titanic submarine disaster: “It’s funny when billionaires die.”
Comedian Pascoe, 42, posted a clip on Instagram showing herself on stage making fun of those who died during the 12,500-foot dive to the cruise ship at the bottom of the Atlantic in June.
Last night she appeared to have removed the video after backlash from fans.
In the footage, shot at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last month, she says: “I liked it when those billionaires died in the submarine, I liked it when the submarine exploded and the billionaires drowned, I could Don’t do anything about it.”
“We don’t have to feel sympathy for billionaires, they have no sympathy for us.”
Comedian Sara Pascoe, 41, provoked a backlash from fans after she posted a post in which she made fun of the victims of the Titanic submarine disaster on stage
“They could solve all the problems in the world and choose not to, so it’s funny, it’s funny when they die.”
“What I want is for the sea, like a horror movie, to get a taste for the super-rich and start picking them off one by one in little man-sized tsunamis.”
“Plus, it’s been called the Titanic experience – what do you expect, ‘not drowning’? I’m obsessed with it. I checked the website as it said in the description when booking. It says “Once in a lifetime” – did you lie?
The victims of the catastrophic submarine implosion were Brits Hamish Harding, 58, head of a private aircraft company, and Shahzada Dawood, 48, deputy chairman of a chemical-energy conglomerate, as well as his son Suleman, 19.
Also killed were French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, and Stockton Rush, 61, head of OceanGate, which conducted dives on the Titanic.
Pascoe is a regular on BBC program QI and has also appeared on Channel 4’s 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.
Before removing the Instagram clip, she faced criticism from fans online.
The submarine, operated by Oceangate, imploded in June while diving 12,500 feet to the shipwreck at the bottom of the Atlantic, killing all passengers on board
One said: “Did you think it was funny when you heard about the 19-year-old on board too?”
Another reviewer said: “I am really disgusted and appalled by this clip. People died and loved ones suffered.’
Another said: “I like a little bit of edgy humor…we seem to be ‘cutting out’ so much of it these days. But this one? It’s a bit personal, a bit mean-spirited and, as has been pointed out in other posts, Sara herself isn’t lacking a bob or two.’
Last year, Pascoe reported a celebrity to TV bosses after a fan told her he had raped her. She revealed she received the tip-off after the alleged victim saw Pascoe and the celebrity on a show together.
Pascoe married Australian comedian and actor Steen Raskopoulos, 36, in 2020 and she is pregnant with their second child.
