The French president called for “getting out of coal very quickly and much faster than today.”

“It is inadequate.” Emmanuel Macron lamented on Sunday September 10th the lack of ambitious climate results at the end of the G20 summit in New Delhi (India). Contrary to the hopes of several observers, the final communiqué from the heads of state and government of the big, rich and emerging powers does not call for a move away from fossil fuels. “I draw everyone’s attention, we are not there,” emphasized the French president during a press conference.

“For my part, I am very concerned about the spirit that is beginning to prevail on the climate issue, including among the G20 members, less than three months after COP28,” he added. He said he had heard “too superficial a discourse prevailing among certain emerging economies to say that only the richest countries have a responsibility.”

Emmanuel Macron called for “getting out of coal very quickly and much faster than today” from 2030, but also “getting out of oil as quickly as possible”, “well before 2050”. “The richest countries have to make an effort, we are there, it costs us,” admitted the head of state. “But we are doing it, it is legitimate and normal,” he said and called on emerging countries, especially oil producers, to now do their part.
