The men’s singles championship will be the 19th – and final – title to be awarded at the 2023 US Open. We’re assuming you know all about Coco Gauff’s big women’s singles win on Saturday (and if you haven’t been following our blog, you can catch up here). But what about the other newly crowned champions?
The double gave us a piece of US Open history. Rajeev Ram of the USA and Joe Salisbury of Great Britain became the first pair to win three consecutive men’s doubles titles in the Open era since 1968 in New York. David Waldstein also wrote about the impressive athletic performance of the losing team, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden.
In women’s doubles, Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand beat Laura Siegemund of Germany and Vera Zvonareva of Russia on Sunday. And in the mixed doubles, Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan and Harri Heliovaara of Finland defeated the No. 1-seeded American team of Jessica Pegula and Austin Krajicek.
In the junior championship, another American teenager took the win: 18-year-old Katherine Hui defeated Tereza Valentova of the Czech Republic to win the girls’ singles title. Joao Fonseca of Brazil won the boys’ singles by defeating American Learner Tien, who also competed in the men’s tournament and lost in the first round to Frances Tiafoe. In the junior doubles, Mara Gae of Romania and Anastasiia Gureva of Russia beat Sara Saito and Nanaka Sato for the girls title, and Max Dahlin of Sweden and Oliver Ojakaar of Estonia defeated Federico Bondioli and Joel Schwaerzler for the boys title.
In the wheelchair championship, the dominant force in women’s tennis completed her third calendar slam in a row. Diede de Groot of the Netherlands defeated Yui Kamiji in straight sets and has now won all four major tournaments every year since 2021. In the men’s, Alfie Hewett defeated his British compatriot and doubles partner Gordon Reid. And in the quad final, doubles partners Niels Vink and Sam Schroder of the Netherlands fought for the title at Louis Armstrong Stadium after winning their third straight doubles title against Andy Lapthorne and Donald Ramphadi at the Open on Saturday.
Stephane Houdet of France and Takashi Sanada of Japan defeated Takuya Miki and Tokito Oda in the men’s wheelchair doubles title. And in the women’s doubles, the team of de Groot and Jiske Griffioen had to withdraw due to an injury to Griffioen, leaving Yui Kamiji of Japan and Kgothatso Montjane of South Africa to win the title.
In the junior division of the Wheelchair Championships, Britain’s Dahnon Ward defeated top seed Francesco Felici in the boys’ singles and also won the doubles crown, teaming with compatriot Joshua Johns to defeat the American team of Charlie Cooper and Tomas Majetic. The girls also had a two-time winner: Ksenia Chasteau from France defeated American Maylee Phelps in the singles and then, together with Phelps, secured a doubles victory over Sabina Czauz and Yuma Takamuro.
