Home Minister Nancy Faeser (53, SPD) is emphatically relaxed about the asylum crisis, saying BILD am SONNTAG, among other things: “I’ve changed more in migration policy than any of my predecessors.”
However, the number of illegal refugees arriving in Germany continues to increase. In August alone, around 15,000 migrants arrived illegally in Germany, 40% more than in the previous year.
Faeser now wants to create an operational analysis center with the Federal Police – to increase the numbers.
This makes many federal officers extremely upset. Reason: There is already a situation center! Heiko Teggatz, president of the Federal Police Union, told BILD: “What nonsense! This shows once again that this Minister of the Interior acts very far from reality. I would like to know who keeps giving this woman wrong advice.”

Unfortunately, these reports are kept secret. Ms. Faeser obviously doesn’t even know her own organization’s processes. Otherwise, they would know that an entire department at the Federal Police Headquarters conducts analyzes and evaluations 24 hours a day.”
Teggatz also rejects Faeser’s claim that border controls are useless: “Border controls are currently the only way to allow the Federal Police to become the responsible border authority.”
And: “The numbers of rejects at the Austrian border and rejects at Basel/Badischer Bahnhof in Swiss territory are now significantly higher than the total numbers for 2022. It is likely to be around 17,000.”

Manuel Ostermann, vice-president of the Federal Police Union, is equally dissatisfied: “When it comes to effective measures in the midst of the migration crisis, the Federal Minister of the Interior commits one gaffe after another. It is as depressing as it is revealing that, after so long, our Federal Minister of the Interior still does not understand the aim and purpose of introducing border controls.”
Ostermann speaks of “a punch in the stomach of the Federal Police” and “a disservice to migratory pressure”.
According to Ostermann, the fight against smuggling gangs is also “only empty rhetoric and no effective measures”. For example, Faeser denied online searches to the Federal Police.
Ostermann: “However, these legal powers are necessary to combat people smuggling gangs and, above all, they are effective. Anyone who chooses to provide the Federal Police with inspection receipts and labeling requirements, but deliberately relinquishes essential legal powers, is acting irresponsibly.”
