This dramatic series of events took place at around 4:35 p.m. at the exit of a company on the Chemin de la Côte-de-Liesse, not far from the intersection with Rue Hébert.

A 28-year-old motorist then hit a 19-year-old pedestrian before he skidded and crashed into a lamppost for reasons unknown, Montreal police witnesses said.

The lamp post then fell to the ground and struck a 23-year-old man who was walking on the sidewalk, injuring his upper body.

The two pedestrians, who were seriously injured when first responders arrived, were taken to a hospital in critical condition. Witnesses were also treated on site for nervous shock.

The driver was not injured and is being picked up by police. Criminal charges could eventually be filed against him, it was said.

A perimeter has been established and investigators will go there to attempt to establish the facts surrounding this tragic accident.
