A distillery accident caused a surprising and impressive flood of red wine in the village of São Lourenço do Bairro in central Portugal.
A splash of red wine. This Sunday, September 10, the streets of the small village of São Lourenço do Bairro, in central Portugal, were literally flooded with wine after an accident at the Levira distillery.
According to the local press, two barrels burst, spilling more than two million liters of drinkable wine onto the streets.
In the pictures we actually discover a garnet-red torrent that flows very quickly down a sloping alley.
No injuries, but damage
Although the incident did not cause any injuries, the leak still caused significant property damage as it flooded the main road, adjacent streets, properties and at least one basement, Diario de Coimbra reports.
The company said it deeply regrets the incident and will “take responsibility for the costs associated with repairs and elimination of the damage.”
For its part, the municipality explained that it managed to prevent an environmental disaster by preventing the torrent of wine from reaching a river. According to Jornal de Noticias, the precious liquid was actually dredged and transported to a wastewater treatment plant.
