Saturday evening became hell for Ernesto Calderón, a young man who was beaten by eight people until he lost consciousness in the Estrella district of Puebla. Thanks to a video published on social networks, the terrible attack suffered by the young man came to light, who, surrounded by numerous people, gave him a violent kick to the head that left him unconscious, while a woman tried to defend him . The Anáhuac University of Puebla recognized several of the attackers as “members of their community” and announced in a statement on Sunday evening that it had suspended them from their academic positions. They have also been banned from entering the university campus while the Puebla Public Prosecutor’s Office is already investigating the incidents to identify all those involved.
In the video, one of the attackers can be heard saying, “I’ll burst your bottle,” while another kicks him hard in the head, leaving Calderón motionless on the ground. After the attack, the threat sounds: “Don’t mess with us again.” It is addressed to a girl who tried to stop the beating. As they leave, one of them is heard saying, “I didn’t wet you,” a phrase attributed to an earlier brawl at a store in the Angelópolis area where the brawl began.
Calderón was taken to the hospital after the beating. A statement from Puebla’s Interior Ministry said the young man was stable and out of danger. Coral Zavaleta, the lawyer for Calderón’s family, denounced in a video uploaded to social networks that the blows caused a fracture to the young man’s skull and that doctors were waiting for his eye socket to close to check whether he had any damage one of his eyes have eyes.
The lawyer has forwarded a complaint to the public prosecutor’s office so that the matter can be investigated and the identity of the attackers can be determined. At the same time, he has called on people interested in Calderón’s state to ignore groups and chats on social networks that ask for money to support him and incite violence against the attackers.
On Monday morning, a demonstration was called to demand justice on Atlixcáyotl Avenue, which runs through the area where Calderón was beaten. Ultimately, it was canceled after several requests from authorities. Zavaleta called on people not to close roads so as not to “cause harm to third parties” as “no situation has yet arisen that justifies the march.” The same was done by the Minister of the Interior of Puebla, who in his statement called on those convening to “reconsider their position,” as they explained that the Public Prosecutor’s Office is already investigating the matter and that results will be available shortly.
