A Ural Airlines plane made an emergency landing in a field in Russia on Tuesday after the pilot reportedly feared the plane would not have enough fuel to reach an airport.
The plane with 159 people on board was on its way from Sochi to Omsk at the time of the emergency landing in the Novosibirsk region, reports Portal, citing Russian news agencies.
“A failure in the [aircraft’s] “A green hydraulic system occurred as the flight approached Omsk,” Russian news agency TASS quoted Ural Airlines CEO Sergey Skuratov as saying.
“The flight increased fuel consumption and the flight commander realized there might not be enough fuel for a landing at Novosibirsk Airport,” he reportedly added. “So he decided to land the plane in a field with the landing gear down, and he succeeded.”

Images published by Portal showed the plane on the ground with the emergency slides extended.
The Russian aviation authority said the landing took place “at an aerially selected location” near the village of Kamenka, according to the Moscow Times.
“All passengers will be accommodated in the nearest village,” it said.

The Russian Investigative Committee has also launched a criminal investigation into the incident, reports the Moscow Times.
The website also reported that Skuratov dismissed the idea that the plane – which it identified as an Airbus A320 – encountered technical difficulties due to a lack of aircraft spare parts due to Western sanctions over the war in Ukraine.

“For Airbus maintenance, we had the opportunity to carry out all kinds of maintenance work,” Skuratov told Russian media site RBC News.
