According to international media, around 50 boats with around 1,900 migrants arrived on the Italian island during the day this Monday, whose reception center is only designed for 400 people.

In this sense, the reception capacity of the facility exceeds the capacity, so migrants are being transferred to other areas of the country, according to the authorities.

The government, in turn, said that the majority of people came from the port city of Sfax in Tunisia, which had crossed the dangerous Mediterranean route.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported at the end of August that more than 2,000 migrants had died trying to cross the central Mediterranean so far this year.

From Tunisia, which has overtaken Libya as the starting point for irregular migration, migrants travel to the island of Lampedusa, 190 kilometers from the Tunisian coast.

The Italian Interior Ministry has reported the arrival of 116,028 migrants in the country in 2023, far exceeding the numbers recorded in previous years.
