In Morocco, the earthquake caused more than just physical damage. Children are traumatized in the Atlas Mountains. Rescue teams try to ease their pain.
They look boring and don’t want to be alone. Some couldn’t save their favorite toys. Children born in the Atlas lost their orientation in one night, and sometimes their mother or father too. A 13-year-old girl no longer leaves her tent. She is crushed by her grief. “The ceiling collapsed. It was dark. I called my father and mother from under the rubble. […] I thought it was the end of the world,” testifies the young girl who lost her father.
Worried children
At the Asni military hospital, young patients receive special care. Injuries are not always visible. The father of three-year-old Omar is worried about his son. “Fear increases his stomach problems tenfold. He is afraid of the slightest noise,” says this father. In this city, classrooms are nothing more than piles of rubble. Under a tent, Army social workers try to recreate the atmosphere of a classroom. “I’m afraid there will be another shock,” worries a little girl.
