It’s never the VMAs without drama, be it real, imagined or imagined, and the first hour of the show on Tuesday night was no exception. Either before or after her performance with Cardi B for her new single “Bongos,” fan footage of Megan Thee Stallion apparently getting into an argument with Justin Timberlake, who took the stage with his (reunited?) NSYNC bandmates at the start of the show .

In a crowded area backstage, Megan is seen getting glammed up as the members of NSYNC walk by. Timberlake can be seen smiling and leaning in to say something to her. Megan responds by emphatically pointing her finger and then turning away angrily.

Then Joey Fatone from the group also says something.

It looks like it might have been a fight, but a backstage source who witnessed the exchange told Variety that there was “no fight.”

“He said, ‘It’s so nice to meet you,’ and she said, ‘No, no, that doesn’t count, that doesn’t count.’ “We need to meet properly.”

“It was very sweet,” says the source. Variety will have more on the situation as it develops.

While no official comment has yet been made, NSYNC has been largely hinting at some sort of reunion for weeks – one that Taylor Swift, the VMAs’ previous big winner, continued when she accepted the night’s first prize from the group for Best Pop Video .

Although the group didn’t respond, they gushed, “Are you going to do something? I need to know what it is!”

What could they do next? The clues couldn’t be less subtle: For weeks, the Internet has been abuzz with reports that the group has recorded a new song written by Timberlake for “Trolls Band Together,” the upcoming third installment in DreamWorks’ animated franchise, judging by the trailers Judging, has a boy band reunion story for Justin Timberlake’s character Branch. The other four members of the group – JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick – are also expected to star in the film with Timberlake.
