Stray Kids, the K-pop octet that released “5-Star” this summer, performed one of the album’s singles, “S-Class,” at the MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday night. It was the group’s first time performing at the awards ceremony.

The group wasted no time in throwing themselves into the energetic performance with seamless choreography. The glittering graphics behind it transported the singers to a laser-filled video game landscape. In the middle of their performance, Stray Kids were joined by a group of other dancers to take the show to the next left. They all got into sync and didn’t miss a beat as they alternated rap verses and vocal harmonies.

The ensemble already took home the award for the best K-pop trophy for “S-Class”. They were already nominated in the same category in 2022 for “Maniac”, a track from their Oddinary EP. They performed this song on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this year.

“What is so special about that? [‘S-Class’] It feels so fresh because we used different sound sources and song forms, giving the illusion that there were several different tracks rolled into one,” the group’s Changbin told Billboard. “I would say the unique and addictive rhythm in the hook is what really stands out.”

“Although all the tracks we considered for the title were great, we ultimately chose ‘S-Class’ as the title because that was the song that really made Stray Kids scream,” Hyunjin added . “Experiments are nothing new for us as we are constantly trying to push our limits. I think this helps us strengthen our distinctive color.”

Other performers at the VMAs this year include Anitta, Olivia Rodrigo, Demi Lovato, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Måneskin, Doja Cat, Tomorrow x Together, as well as Shakira, who will be honored with the Video Vanguard Award, and Diddy, who will be honored with the Global Award won the symbol title.

The MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live on MTV from the Prudential Center in New Jersey.

Stray Kids’ Bang Chan, the group’s leader, explained the meaning of the name Stray Kids in an interview with Rolling Stone Australia in 2021. Commenting on the slogan “Stray Kids everywhere around the world,” he told the magazine: “That is “It’s not just us.” “We try to keep them on the same path as us,” said Felix, one of the group’s rappers. “Just looking at the words ‘Stray Kids’ reminds me that I’ve been through a lot. I can humbly become a part of it, together with people who have also been through a lot.”
