The presence today in Havana of numerous heads of state and government as well as high-ranking representatives of the G77 and China is a reflection of Cuba’s leadership at the forefront of the group’s coordination, experts say.

For the director of the International Policy Research Center, José Ramón Cabañas, the next summit of the largest bloc of developing countries within the United Nations system, which will take place on September 15 and 16 in Havana, will confirm the performance of this Caribbean nation in the Consensus building and its commitment to multilateralism.

Since Cuba assumed the pro tempore presidency of the G77 and China in January 2023, it has developed an intensive agenda to put into practice the vision of the group, which represents 80 percent of the world’s population and more than two-thirds of the members of the United Nations .

During this period, important meetings took place on the island, including the meetings of the group’s ministers of education, culture and tourism, and last July the meeting of ministers and high environmental authorities of the 134 countries took place in Havana.

At the request of Cuba, the G77 and China, the draft resolutions “Towards a new international economic order” and “Unilateral economic measures as a political and economic means of coercion against developing countries” were also submitted to the Second Committee of the UN Secretary-General Assembly. Development”.

This summit is crucial in a global scenario characterized by the significant technological gap that limits the development opportunities of southern countries and the need to develop strategies for a more just and truly democratic world.

Therefore, the meeting on this occasion aims to discuss the current development challenges: role of science, technology and innovation.

Recently, President Miguel Díaz-Canel highlighted the paradox that these three essential pillars of progress have been at the forefront of the response to the Covid-19 pandemic, while their benefits have been beyond the reach of those most in need.

To change this scenario, to build a more equitable relationship and a truly democratic and inclusive order that privileges international solidarity and cooperation, for this the members of the G-77 + China are blessed, he assured.

The aim of this event is therefore to identify the potential of the nations that make up the bloc in terms of science, technology and innovation and to consolidate the unity, integration and complementarity of the scientific structures of the countries of the bloc to meet future challenges .

The meeting is of particular importance given the efforts of southern countries to find paths for their independent and sovereign development in the context of a multidimensional crisis at the global level and the West’s attempts to maintain its hegemonism in the wake of the rise of emerging countries as global economic leaders.
