The Ocean Explorer cruise ship is stranded in Greenland, attempts to free it failed

The Australian cruise ship Ocean Explorer is still stranded in Greenland with 206 passengers and crew on board. Three people are positive for Covid.

So far, attempts to free them have failed. A Danish warship is on its way to help, but authorities say bad weather has delayed its arrival, which is now expected on Friday evening.

The ship remained stranded on Monday in Alpefjord National Park, about 1,400 kilometers northeast of Nuuk, the capital of the autonomous Danish territory. Among the people on board, three tested positive for Covid and were isolated. In a statement, Aurora Expeditions emphasized that there was “no immediate danger to themselves, the ship or the surrounding area.”

The 104-meter-long ship, which left Norway on September 1 for a cruise scheduled until September 22, remains stuck after yesterday’s high tide failed to free it. Most of the passengers, who according to one of them are “all fine,” are Australians, but there are also New Zealanders, Brits, Americans and South Koreans. The reasons why the luxury cruise ship ran aground are still unclear.
