This work is not necessarily an overview of the phenomena discovered, but rather a methodological approach to what is necessary to better understand the nature of these phenomena in the future. NASA selected 16 people to participate in the study, which began with an additional burden: It focused only on information that was not classified or confidential.

The team consisted of nine men and seven women, including “some of the world’s leading scientists, data and artificial intelligence experts, and aerospace security experts,” the agency said. It was led by David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation, where he was founding director of the Flatiron Institute for Computational Astrophysics. His interests range from finding nearby planets and stars to the shape of the universe. Spergel has insisted on the importance of data in the scientific approach to phenomena, pointing out that what is available is inconclusive. Although NASA has nothing to do with this new study, it does have an active astrobiology program focused on the origins, evolution, and spread of life beyond Earth. From exploring water on Mars to exploring promising “ocean worlds” like Titan and Europa, NASA science missions are working together to find signs of life beyond Earth.
