Update from September 14th: A regional prosecutor in Tijuana has released more information about the suspect arrested in connection with the narcomantas erected and threatening Peso Pluma. “He was at the right time and the right place. When he saw the authorities, he ran away. He was subsequently arrested and found with narcotics in his pocket. It was almost three in the morning,” said José Fernando Sánchez González, Secretariat of Municipal Security and Citizen Protection, according to Billboard. Montserrat Caballero Ramírez, the mayor of Tijuana, said the Peso Pluma show could be canceled in the name of public safety. “Singers like Peso Pluma glorify the crime, so there are certain groups that are upset and unfortunately those who suffer the consequences are the citizens who want to attend their concerts and then end up in danger,” she said. “In the next few days we will decide whether the concert will take place or not.”

According to several sources, banners threatening Peso Pluma’s death have appeared in Tijuana. The banners were signed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and according to the Arizona Republic they read: “This goes to Peso Pluma, refrain from presenting yourself on October 14th as this will be your last show due to your disrespect and loose tongue . “You show up and we’re going to (destroy you).” This happens in advance of Pluma’s show at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana. According to Punto Norte, a 43-year-old man was arrested in possession of one of the banners.
Peso Pluma is under cartel control for his narcocorridos, a subgenre of Mexican regional music that depicts drug trafficking in its lyrics. Pluma has performed several songs from the perspective of a Sinaloa cartel member. Pluma has not claimed to be a member of the cartel, but has said (according to Pitchfork) that cartels sometimes pay to have songs written in their honor. News of the cartel news broke hours before Peso Pluma’s performance at the 2023 VMAs.
