Boy saves drowning man after seeing cardiac maneuver in Stranger Things

A 12yearold boy saved his own occupational therapist during an activity in his home swimming pool. Jason Piquette became sick in the water and began drowning. Thanks to a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuver that the boy learned from the series “Stranger Things,” Austen MacMillan managed to save him. The case took place in Florida in the United States.

In a report by USA Today, an American newspaper, the therapist said he felt sick during a game that went wrong. The two used a stopwatch and competed to see who could hold their breath the longest underwater. Piquette called little Austen a “hero.”

Images from the family’s surveillance cameras show the man floating motionless, face down in the pool. Austen checked the timer, saw that five minutes had already passed, and realized that was too long.

Austen jumped into the water to check on the therapist. When he didn’t respond, Austen pulled him out of the deep end and laid him face down on the shallow steps of the pool. The boy ran out the front door screaming for help without responding, returned to the garden and began CPR. He also tried to call 911 using Piquette’s phone but was unable to unlock it.

“I think I passed out after about 30 seconds and I don’t know why,” Piquette told Good Morning America. “I am amazed at the strength and wisdom he had in that moment. And I always want him to know that he is a hero.”

When asked how he learned to perform the cardiac resuscitation maneuver, the boy said he remembered a scene from “Stranger Things.” The twominute scene shows Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Jim Hopper (David Harbor) performing chest compressions on Byers’ unconscious son Will (Noah Schnapp). Hopper desperately beats on Will’s chest to revive him.

Austen’s father came home shortly afterwards and called 911. Piquette was admitted to the intensive care unit overnight and given 100% oxygen. Although Austen’s quick thinking and determination helped save Piquette, he was shaken afterward, his mother said.
