Recounting the story of the saga for Vogue on Wednesday, she cast doubt on rumors that the studio had agreed to reunite the original cast for a third film. “I dare you to show me one person who doesn’t want a third Mamma Mia!” she began. Nobody says no, but nobody says yes either. To be honest, the powers that be probably can’t afford to have us. I hate to say this because of course I would make Mamma Mia 3 free, but that’s not the business we’re in. What’s fair is fair, and I feel like a third film will result in something stupid, like whether Universal wants to release the money or not.

Donna Langley, president of Universal Pictures, only told Vogue that the studio would “love to make a third film,” something that has been discussed many times since the release of the second film, Mamma Mia!. Here we go again.

Elsewhere in the video, Stellan Skarsgard said: “I’ll be lying in an urn if there’s a script for Mamma Mia 3, but I’ll happily take part in it as a pile of ashes.”

Her actress Meryl Streep, whose character was killed in the second film, has also expressed interest in returning. “I said [à la productrice Judy Craymer] If she could find a way to revive Donna, I would like that. Or it could be like one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals that her twin sister actually died, she added humorously. Maybe we’ll have to call her Grandma Mia while we’re at it!”

The Maman Mia franchise! Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski also star.
