A shooting left six people dead at a bar in Jalisco state, a region of western Mexico where criminal groups operate, local authorities said Saturday. The shooting occurred late Friday evening in the city of Teocaltiche, during Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations, the prosecutor said in a statement. “Several people were shot in a bar in the Maravillas neighborhood,” he said. Investigators reported a death toll of six on Saturday.

The state of Jalisco is rocked by violence from the New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico’s largest criminal groups. In Teocaltiche, north of the state capital Guadalajara, there was a shootout on September 2nd that left two police officers dead.

Since the federal government launched an anti-drug campaign with the support of the army in 2006, more than 340,000 murders and around 100,000 cases of enforced disappearances have been registered, most of them linked to criminal organizations.
