The US chief of staff says the Ukrainian counteroffensive is planned "slower than expected"

On CNN this Sunday, General Mark Milley estimated that Kiev’s offensive against the Russian army in Ukraine “has not failed.”

The Ukrainian counteroffensive “did not fail”, but the road to a final victory for Kiev in the conflict is still very long, said American Chief of Staff General Mark Milley in an interview broadcast on Sunday.

Ukraine launched a counteroffensive in June to recapture Russian-occupied territory after receiving Western weapons and training new battalions.

“I know some observers say this offensive has failed. It has not failed,” the American general said in an interview on CNN.

“This offensive, while slow, slower than expected, remained consistent,” he said, reiterating that the Ukrainians still had “significant striking power.”

However, the general acknowledged that it “will take a long time” to achieve Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s goal of “expelling all Russians from the country.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will be welcomed to the White House on Thursday for new talks with President Joe Biden about supporting Kiev against the Russian invasion.

This trip comes at a time when the American Congress is debating a new $24 billion in military aid for Kiev. Volodymyr Zelensky was also scheduled to go to the Capitol to meet Republican and Democratic leadership.
