The film about bank robbers starring Gerard Butler is one of the greatest masterpieces of the action genre. Filming on a sequel has already been completed and is scheduled to hit theaters in 2024.
Gerard Butler’s specialty is stalwart heroes. At least that’s what his roles in films like “300” or “Invasion of the Secret Service” suggest. However, in his most repulsive role in Den of Thieves, things are completely different. Here, Butler is a dirty, corrupt cop who uses any means necessary to get his job done. The action film is available on HBO Max and Prime Video.
Den of Thieves is like an action masterpiece
In Den of Thieves, a group of former elite soldiers plan an attack on the US Federal Reserve in San Francisco. After a bloody attack on an armored truck, police officer Nick O’Brien (Butler) is sent after the criminals and tries to stop them using brutal methods.
Thanks to its bank heist plot, dueling drama and wellstaged action scenes, “Den of Thieves” is often compared to director Michael Mann’s 1995 masterpiece “Fire Against Fire” (also available on HBO Max and Prime Video). Ultimately, this milestone isn’t quite reached for many, but it’s still well above the genre’s average.
The action film received only average reviews (via Metacritic), but was a moderate success at the box office. Plans for Den of Thieves 2 have been around since 2018. According to the North American magazine Deadline Hollywood, filming for the film has already been completed and will, among other things, bring Butler back as O’Brien. The film will be set in Europe and will be released in cinemas in 2024.
