Arab Parliament defends dialogue to end war in Yemen

Cairo, September 18 (Prensa Latina) Arab Parliament President Adel Al-Assoumi today highlighted regional efforts to end the war in Yemen, which is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.

In a statement, the official praised contacts between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels, mediated by Oman, to find a negotiated solution to the conflict that began in 2014.

Al-Assoumi called for silencing the guns after warning about the consequences of the serious humanitarian crisis in that country.

He also called for work to lay the foundations of the Yemeni state, develop its institutions and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to all its people.

For the first time since the start of the war, a ten-member Houthi delegation arrived in Riyadh last Thursday, whose government supports the internationally recognized Yemeni authorities.

The official Saudi news agency SPA said the goal was to “achieve a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire in Yemen and a sustainable political solution acceptable to all parties.”

The conflict in the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country began in 2014 after the offensive that allowed the armed group to seize large parts of the country, including the capital Sanaa.

The following year, an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in the conflict in support of then-President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, more than 20 million Yemenis out of a population of 31 million lack access to basic health care and 16.2 million are at risk of food insecurity.
