It was revealed here today that Tuareg rebels carried out an attack on a Malian military barracks in the town of Leré in Tumbuktu province amid a wave of clashes.
The Tuareg rebel coalition Coordination of Movements of Azawad (CMA) said it was in control of these Malian army facilities after two hours of fighting.
Meanwhile, the Malian army confirmed the attack in a statement on the social network X, stressing that a response was underway.
Recently, the CMA declared it was in a state of war with the Malian military junta after denouncing a series of attacks by the army, and recent fighting has already left dozens of people dead on both sides.
Last April, a UN panel called on warring parties in northern Mali to ease tensions in order to revive the peace pact signed in 2015.
For its part, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (Minusma) has called for maximum moderation to guarantee the process of application of the above-mentioned agreement.
Minusma’s objectives include supporting stabilization in the area, including the development of security-related tasks.
The aforementioned peace agreement, signed almost eight years ago in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, stipulates, among other things, that the Tuareg separatists integrate the country’s armed forces and that the national authorities promote a sub-regional security and economic development plan.
Mali, a country in the Sahel region, is mired in a deep political crisis, which has worsened following successive coups in August 2020 and May 2021.
