UNESCO has included the island of Djerba on its World Heritage List. The decision was made during the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, the Tunis Ministry of Culture said in a statement in which it praised “the joint efforts of the various ministries, some parties and civil society” for the approval of the dossier with the Title “Djerba: Cultural Landscape, Evidence for a Type of Occupation of an Island Territory”.
This means that the island of Djerba joins the list of eight Tunisian sites that are already on the World Heritage List, including seven cultural sites and one natural site. The Ichkeul National Park was placed under monument protection in 1980. Lake Ichkeul is the last large freshwater lake in a chain that once stretched across North Africa. Cultural sites on the UNESCO list include the Medina of Tunis, Carthage, the Roman Amphitheater of El Jem (1979), Kerkouane (1986), the Medina of Sousse, the Medina of Kairouan (1988) and Dougga (1997).
