Countless X users have threatened to delete their accounts as Elon Musk announced that everyone will soon face a “small monthly payment.”

The billionaire owner of the platform formerly known as Twitter caused outrage today when he claimed that charging extra fees to all users was the only way to crack down on bots.

These drastic plans come less than a year after Musk’s Twitter takeover, which has already seen the platform’s Blue Tick verification system monetized at more than £100/$84 per year.

Now all users are facing charges, sparking further interest in Mark Zuckerberg’s “Twitter killer” app Threads.

Although Threads’ active user base has declined in recent months, many are wondering whether there will be a resurgence if Musk’s plans are put into action.

Like X, Zuckerberg’s platform allows users to write thread-style posts and share media content for free to non-subscribers.

Although Threads’ active user base has declined in recent months, many are wondering whether there will be a resurgence if Musk’s plans are put into action

Jake Moore, cybersecurity expert at ESET, also warned that asking all users to pay could create a bigger problem than the bots on X.

He told Web: “Bots were a problem on the platform from the start, but when Musk laid off staff en masse, including security guards, the problem took on a rather uncontrollable proportion.”

“Requiring payment from all users could potentially mitigate this problem, but he could have a bigger problem on his hands with a mass exodus of users.”

“With many similar alternatives like Threads and Mastadon already set up, this could be the final push for some users to switch to the competition.”
