Torrential rains believed to be the heaviest in a century have caused flooding in northern Iran, injuring 20 people and causing damage, local media reported on Tuesday.
The rains, which are frequent in the north of the country, began on Sunday and particularly hit the city of Astara in Guilan province on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

“271 mm of water fell on Astara, an amount not seen in a century,” said the provincial crisis management head, Amir Moradi, of the local Isna news agency.

In Astara, at least one bridge was destroyed while rescue teams were mobilized to help affected residents.
According to media reports, floods in 2022 claimed at least 96 lives in 21 of Iran’s 31 provinces.
