Renowned cartoonist and animation director Jorge Oliver, creator of Captain Plin, has died

The well-known Cuban cartoonist, graphic designer and cartoon director Jorge Oliver Medina He died today in Havana at the age of 75 from unknown causes.

A recognized representative of Cuban graphic art, in which his works dedicated to children played a major role, Oliver is primarily associated with Captain Plin and the other characters from Cocos Island, a comic adapted into the animated series.

Adult audiences will remember him as the host of the television show “Cuadro a Cuadro,” which has shown films based on comic book characters every summer since 2005, and in which he also acted as screenwriter and director.

He was born in the capital on December 15, 1947 and graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in art history.

He was also a journalist and writer, a member of the Presidium of the Cuban Association of Social Communicators and headed the Department of Humor and Comics of the José Martí International Institute of Journalism.

He has received several awards, including the National Children’s Literature Prize “La Rosa Blanca” in 2006 and 2007.
