NHL: He changes his number and offers fans a discount

New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier has decided to change his number ahead of next season and offer a discount to fans who bought his old vest.

The 26-year-old Swiss moved from the San Jose Sharks to the Devils in February 2023. With his new team he wore number 96. The striker then signed an eight-year contract extension worth a total of $70.4 million.

The New Jesery club swapped full-back Damon Severson this summer, freeing up the number 28 spot. That’s the number Meier wore throughout his Sharks career.

The star player took advantage of the opportunity and decided to return to his first love.

“I spoke to my family and friends about it and asked them their opinion. The majority of them said “28.” […] In the National League that’s my number. He brought me luck,” said Meier, whose comments were reported by the Devils website.

However, the hockey player wanted those who bought his number 96 jersey to receive compensation if they wanted to replace their jersey with his new number. Fans will therefore receive a 28% discount if they make an exchange during the first two weeks of the regular season. Additionally, the first 128 fans to make this change will receive a puck signed by Meier.

During the same period, the player donated the equivalent of 28% of all sales of his number 28 jersey to the development of youth hockey in New Jersey.
