At least one of the two dams whose failure occurred in Libya for one Flood disaster with thousands of deaths according to an expert made of earth and not cement built. “The dam that broke was made only of sand and rocks,” wrote Claudia Gazzini, from the think tank International Crisis Group, on Twitter this Tuesday (X). “The control tower and huge sewer were made of cement and both are still standing.”

The port city of Darna was particularly hard hit by the disaster
Gazzini also published in X photos of his visit to one of the two dams about ten kilometers south of the Port city of Darna, which was particularly hit by the catastrophe. Remnants of a dam can be seen in the dry riverbed. According to one resident, the basin quickly filled during heavy rains on the night of September 10, and after just five hours the water overflowed the top of the dam.

As a result of “Daniel” by Sturm Two dams in Darna broke. Entire neighborhoods of the city, which has a population of 100,000 inhabitants, were swept away by the floods. The authorities are accused of not properly maintaining the dams and thus contributing to the disaster. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 4,000 deaths identified. The eastern government has so far put the number of officially recorded deaths at 3,338. Tens of thousands of people were left homeless by the disaster.
