Polydactyly
The little girl suffers from it Polydactyly, a genetic disorder that, when it occurs, affects only one hand while affecting all four limbs. It is a rather rare event, affecting only one in 1,000 children, according to Boston Children’s Hospital. Fortunately, there is no harm or side effects with this physical illness.
Considered a goddess
“She came to our house like a goddess. “We are all lucky that ‘Lakshmi’, the Hindu goddess of wealth, luck and power, was born in our family,” said Deepak, the girl’s uncle. Polydactyly usually develops while the baby is still in the womb. Before fingers and hands develop they look like paddles, which then separate.
Finger removed
Doctors usually notice polydactyly before birth, through an ultrasound scan during pregnancy. Once the baby is born, doctors usually take x-rays to determine the underlying structure, which can help choose treatment options. For this reason, the extra toes are usually removed when the child is a little older, i.e. between the ages of 1 and 2 years.
