Armies of El Salvador and Honduras united against gangs

The uniformed officers are jointly carrying out operations in blind spots in the Morazán department to combat smuggling and intercept gang members trying to flee the emergency regime in force in El Salvador since March 2022.

As part of the Central American Armed Forces Conference (CFAC), we carried out binational patrols in the Morazán border area together with the Armed Forces of Honduras, the Salvadoran Army reported in a statement on social networks.

Local authorities said some gang members fled to neighboring countries to avoid arrest. Reports from their colleagues in Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica report the arrest of more than 70 suspected Salvadoran gangs who were evicted and surrendered between January 1 and August 11, 2023.

On the other hand, the National Civil Police of El Salvador announced this Tuesday the arrest of a gang member who was carrying a heavy-caliber firearm in a sector of the Santa Ana department.

An AK 47 assault rifle, a .45 caliber pistol and ammunition for both devices were confiscated from the perpetrator named Julio César Vásquez Morán, alias Pitufo, an active member of the MS13 gang.
