Costco customer tries to leave store without showing proof of purchase and is stopped by workers

A Costco customer went viral on TikTok by posting a video in which he refused to show the proof of purchase to Costco employees and they decided to stop him. The customer says this act was illegal.

The customer, who goes by the username @rakeshndutt on TikTok, has more than 249,000 views on his video, which has text superimposed on the images that says, “Costco employees are illegally detaining us again for a receipt.”

In the video, you can see @rakeshndutt walking his cart past a worker in charge of checking people’s receipts as they leave.

As @rakeshndutt is about to leave, he is stopped by the worker and manager and asked for his receipt. As you know, Costco does this to everyone.

Although it is unclear what happened before the recording began, the staff’s behavior does not appear to be unusual..

Employees check various things on the receipt. First, they look at the date it was printed. They then count the products to make sure they haven’t overcharged or undercharged customers.

It should be noted that in most stores, staff cannot stop a customer if they do not show their receipt. You can only arrest someone if there is reasonable suspicion of theft.

In Costco’s case, however, things are different: When someone pays for a membership, they also sign a contract that says the store can inspect their purchases before they leave the store.

Under the terms of the contract, member stores could detain anyone who refuses to present their receipt at the dooraccording to The Daily Dot.
