Iran and Russia sign long term military cooperation pact September 5th

Iran and Russia are working on a long-term military and defense cooperation document that would be practical for both countries, according to a senior Iranian military commander.

At a meeting with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Tuesday in the Iranian capital Tehran, the Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, emphasized the importance of strengthening relations between Iran and Russia, and announced that the two signed the document for the long-term to work out cooperation that, according to the leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, is practical for both countries.

“This document has strong military and defense dimensions and can be an appropriate platform for developing long-term cooperation between the two countries,” he explained.

According to the Iranian military high command, relations between Tehran and Moscow are on a path of growth and development that has acquired new dimensions over time.

“The events that have currently occurred in the world indicate that the period of the unipolar world is coming to an end and the structure of the international system is moving towards a multipolar world,” Baqeri said, adding that the Positions of Iran and Russia suggest the same.

He recalled the development of bilateral relations between Iran and Russia in recent years and emphasized the need for the two countries to promote bilateral cooperation in order to bring bilateral relations to the desired level.

In this regard, he referred to the relations between the military sectors of both countries, such as the holding of joint military and defense commissions, and emphasized that they are among the pioneers in promoting relations between Tehran and Moscow.

Shoigu, in turn, thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for its welcome and noted that his trip is aimed at developing defense cooperation in the areas of interest of the two countries.

In addition, emphasis was placed on cooperation on educational issues, the exchange of students at university level and the implementation of joint exercises.

Both sides have also expressed their willingness to resolve disputes between the countries of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
